Commissioned by Urban Network Office, Shanghai, this documentary photography project set out to document over a dozen of Allied Architects’ standstill architectures across Shanghai and Nanjing. Established in 1931 and dissolved in 1952, the firm, led by partners ZHAO Shen, CHEN Zhi, and TONG Jun, embarked on a journey of relentless exploration and practice, shaping the essence of modern Chinese architecture and completing approximately two hundred projects in China.
Many of these architectural gems have fallen victim to wartime destruction, while others have undergone repurposing during urban renewal. Despite this, some still stand today as testaments to their enduring legacy, marking a period when Chinese architects first forged a modern design of their own.
